READING, Pa. -- Ally Tama (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) won the pole vault with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark and
Gabby Payne (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) was victorious in the long jump with the third-best jump in program history as the Kutztown University women's indoor track & field team took part in the Alvernia Winter Invitational Saturday.
Tama, the defending PSAC indoor (2020) outdoor (2021) champion in the pole vault, set a new indoor personal best by clearing 3.89m (12-feet, 9-inches) as Golden Bears swept the top two spots
The Towanda, Pa., native's performance Saturday is tied for ninth best in NCAA Division II this season and was her second PSAC qualifying vault in as many meets. Tama remained second on KU's all-time top 10, but has her sights set on the school record, now just one foot shy of Emma Sullivan's 3.91m (12'10"), which came at the 2016 NCAA DII Championships and earned Sullivan All-American honors.
Kathleen Silverman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) placed second to her teammate with a best vault of 3.20m (10'6") and
Megan Kearns (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) gave the Bears three in the top 10 with the eighth-best effort at 2.90m (9'6.25"), which was a personal best.
If Payne's debut meet was any indication of the future, the sky is the limit for the Great Valley grad. She earned a spot in the KU record books with authority, winning the long jump over 40 other competitors with a mark of 5.52m (18'1.50"), which is the third-best jump in program history. Payne also punched her ticket to the PSAC Championships and is within six inches of the NCAA provisional qualifying threshold.
Fellow freshman and record seeker
Brianna Foster (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley Park) was a force in the 60-meter dash again, putting down the second-fastest time in preliminaries with a 7.94 and bettering that by almost a tenth in the finals to finish runner-up in 7.86. Foster has achieved PSAC qualifying status in both meets she has competed in this season.
Kutztown got a handful of other top 10 finishes on the day, led by the 4x400m relay of
Taniyah Lawler (Chester, Pa./Chester),
Angela Iaccarino (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury),
Jaidah Mitchell (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton Township) and
Raechel Bonner (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), which took second of 20 teams with a 4:11.68.
Bonner placed third of 73 runners in the 200m with a time of 26.75. Earlier in the day she finished sixth among 44 athletes in the 400m in 1:02.03.
Kira Solt (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) qualified for the 60m hurdles finals with the fourth-best time in prelims (9.51) and that's exactly where she ended up at meet's end, crossing the line in 9.52 in the finals.
Newcomer
Kacie Sienko (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), from Langhorne, Pa., set a new personal best of 10.22m (33'6.50") en route to an eighth-place finish in the triple jump.
In total, eight personal records were set by Golden Bear student-athletes Saturday.
Kutztown continues its run of seven straight weeks in action following the holidays next Friday and Saturday at the Bucknell Bison Open & Multi.
