Tama wins pole vault with NCAA provisional mark, Mohler joins top 10 in 60m hurdles as Golden Bears open 2021-22 indoor season

RESULTS

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Defending Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) outdoor pole vault champion Ally Tama (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) picked up right where she left off in May, winning the event with a PSAC qualifying and NCAA provisional mark of 3.80m (12'5.5") as the Kutztown University track & field team opened its 2021-22 indoor season Friday night at Lehigh's Fast Times Before Finals Meet.

Tama wasn't the only Golden Bear to shine, as freshman Elizabeth Mohler (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley) set the seventh fastest 60-meter hurdles time in school history with a 9.33 in the opening event of the pentathlon.

The Maroon and Gold were represented by a strong contingent in the pole vault, with eight of the 13 competitors. Tama rose above the rest, however, securing a spot at the conference championship meet and surpassing the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying threshold in her first time out this season. Tama cleared 3.80m on her first attempt, while no other vaulter cleared 3.65m in the meet. Teammates Kathleen Silverman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Myah Davies (New Market, Md./Linganore) tied for third by clearing 3.20m (10'6").

Mohler turned heads in her debut with her performance in the 60m hurdles. Her 9.33 is KU's quickest time in the event since Kira Solt's (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) 9.07 back in 2019. The Twin Valley product also set an automatic PSAC qualifying time. Mohler had the fourth-best long jump (5.03m, 16'6"), while Skylar Miller (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) posted the third-best high jump mark at 1.54m (5'0.5") of the 13 pentathlon athletes. Overall, Mohler was sixth with 2801 points, Jonna Pettus (Easton, Pa./Easton) 10th with 2594 points and Miller 11th with 2581 points.

On the men's side, it was a light evening as two Bears took part in the weight throw. Jason Staunton (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) placed eighth with a top throw of 13.12m (43'0.5") and Jacob Solonoski (Weatherly, Pa./Weatherly) was 12th at 11.39m (37'4.5").

Kutztown will take a greater portion of its roster up to Bethlehem to compete on Saturday when the meet resumes at 9 a.m.
