KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The 14th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team got another shot at eighth-ranked Lake Erie College on Saturday on its home mat. It came down to the final bout but the Golden Bears pulled through to win 21-16.
Kutztown (9-6) honored its five seniors on Saturday at Keystone Arena in a pre-match ceremony, featuring
Brandon Parker,
Andre Petroski,
Jackson Stabile,
Bo Candelaria and
Ziad Haddad in this year's senior class.
Earlier in the season, Lake Erie upset Kutztown at the National Duals, 33-12. This time around, the Golden Bears won four of the final six bouts to secure the victory.
After a riding-time win at 197 pounds, Lake Erie (10-6) held a 16-15 lead going into the final bout. Haddad, the top-ranked heavyweight in the nation, shined under pressure and pinned Noah Hasking in 54 seconds to earn his team the victory. It is the second time this season Haddad has pinned Hasking and the win improves him to 20-0.
The Golden Bears got off to a 6-0 start with a forfeit at 125 pounds, but Lake Erie stormed back with three-straight wins to go up 10-6.
Matt Martoccio got KU back on the board in the 157-pound match, battling back-and-forth with Christian Baughman for all three rounds. Baughman scored a late takedown to cut the deficit, but Martoccio's riding time earned him a 10-8 decision.
Candelaria tied the score at 2-2 with under 20 seconds left in the 165-pound bout against Matt Vandermeer to force overtime, but Vandermeer got the first jump for the sudden-victory.
Ryan Krecker and Petroski tallied back-to-back decisions to retake the lead for KU, 15-13. At 174 pounds, Krecker and Nick Vandermeer were tied 2-2 late in the third period, but Krecker's reversal with four seconds left gave Kutztown the advantage. Petroski scored two takedowns in the 184-pound bout to lead him to a 5-2 decision over Zev Green.
The Golden Bears will return to action on Wednesday. Feb. 11 with an away match at Millersville University at 7 p.m.
