WEEK 2 NOTES: Golden Bear Football Hosts Nationally-Ranked IUP for Saturday's Home-Opener

BEAR BITES
• In his first career start, Chad Barton (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) threw for 358 yards on a school-record 64 passes.
Sam Dougan (Secane, Pa./Ridley) is the 17th Golden Bear in program history with 200 career tackles (202).
Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) moved up to ninth in the KU record book for career touchdowns (16).
• Saturday's PSAC crossover games will count in the divisional standings.
• KU and Indiana (PA) meet for the first time since 2009.
Anthony Kelly (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) had his first multi-TD game of his career last week.
• Saturday marks Community Day at University Field.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Saturday marks the 11th meeting between the Golden Bears and Crimson Hawks. Kutztown is 0-9-1 all-time against Indiana (PA). Kutztown and IUP played to a 13-13 tie in the first meeting in series history in 1950.
 
BROADCAST INFORMATION: The game will air live on PBS39 WLVT in the tri-state area, and on KUTV, which is Service Electric Channel 24, Hometown Utilicom Channel 28 in Kutztown and eastern Berks County, and Service Electric Channel 266 in the Lehigh Valley. Mike Miller and Mike Iannucci return for the 2014 season and have the call for KUTV for the 2014 season. It will re-air on KUTV on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 15 at 3 p.m., and Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 12 p.m.
 
On the road in 2014, KU football will be broadcast online through, "The Radio Voice of Kutztown University, KUR." Matt Santos, Kutztown University's director of university relations who has covered Golden Bear Football since coming to KU in 1992, will have the call at Kutztown's six road games in 2014. The pregame show will start 10 minutes prior to kickoff.
 
RAPID FIRE: Kutztown ran 91 plays against Slippery Rock last week. The most it ran in 2013 was 89 (Clarion) and it ran more than 90 only one time in 2012 (91 vs. Saint Anselm). The school-record is believed to be 98 in 2007 against Southern Connecticut State.
 
ICE THAT ARM: In his first career start, QB Chad Barton (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) set the school-record with 64 pass attempts last week vs. Slippery Rock. The previous record of 63 attempts was held by Kevin Morton from 2012 against Shippensburg.
 
SAM I AM: Senior Sam Dougan (Secane, Pa./Ridley) led the way with eight tackles against Slippery Rock, making him the 17th Golden Bear in program history with 200 tackles (202). Dougan is a two-time All-PSAC MLB after earning second team honors last season. He made a career-high 90 tackles in 2012 and put up nearly identical numbers in 2013 with 88 tackles despite not playing in the final game of the season.
 
MULTIPLE TD GRABS: WR Anthony Kelly (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) recorded the first multi-TD game of his career last week against Slippery Rock, when he hauled in 84 yards, the second-most of his career. In 2013, Kutztown had four two-TD games by receivers and two by running backs.
 
FEATURED FRESHMAN: WR Nathan Hollander (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) caught a team-high 10 passes last week vs. Slippery Rock in his first collegiate game. It is the second straight year that a freshman has led the team in catches in the season-opener, as A. Tonnies made a school-record 17 receptions in the 2013 opener at Clarion.
 
LIKE A ROCK: For the second consecutive year, Kutztown failed to rush for more than 10 yards against Slippery Rock. In both games, however, KU took to the air for its offensive production with more than 50 pass attempts and 250 yards, including a school-record 64 pass attempts by Chad Barton (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) in 2014.
 
STARTERS RETURNING: The Golden Bears return 17 of the 22 starters from last season, eight on offense and nine on defense. It also welcomes back 34 letterwinners from last season, 16 on offense and 17 on defense.
 
HAPPY 99TH BIRTHDAY: 2014 kicks off the 99th season of Kutztown University football. Beginning in 1895, Kutztown's all-time record in 797 games stands at 349-425-23 (.453).
 
STRETCHING THE FIELD: Kutztown had one play go for 50 or more yards last season, a 78-yard touchdown run by Darrell Scott (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) against ESU. KU's longest pass was a 49-yard touchdown from Josh Luckenbaugh (York, Pa./Dallastown) to A. Tonnies against Lock Haven. KU is still looking for its first 50+ yard play of the season.
 
MR. REED: Redshirt junior Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) opened his 2014 campaign with a 24-yard touchdown catch, the 16th of his career. He is now tied for ninth on the KU career leaderboard. He is coming off a career-best season and was Kutztown's offensive representative on the all-conference team. He led the team with a career-high 797 yards and 60 catches for nine touchdowns. He was fourth in the PSAC in touchdowns, eighth in catches and ninth with 72.5 yards per game. Reed's nine TD grabs tied him for seventh in school history for a single-season.
 
100-CATCH CLUB: Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) and Brett Fox (Laureldale, Pa./Muhlenburg) are approaching 100 catches in their careers. Both in their third year with the program, Reed has 95 catches and Fox has 93. There are currently 11 players in school history with 100 career catches, led by KU Hall of Famer Mark Steinmeyer's 200 from 1988-91.
 
HALL OF FAME: Kutztown University graduate Andre Reed '05 was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 2, 2014. Reed was a four-year letterman at Kutztown from 1981-84, making 142 career catches for 2,002 yards and 14 touchdowns. Upon completion of his collegiate career, he held school records for catches, receiving yards and touchdowns in a game, season and career. Though all of his records have since been broken, Reed still ranks among the top five receivers in several statistical categories. He wore number 88 and is the first player in PSAC history to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
 
ENGLISH 101: Senior English Peay (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington) is a four-year starter at cornerback and has been Kutztown's No. 1 option for much of his career. He had a career-high 66 tackles in his freshman season and posted two shy of that mark in 2013. He was an All-PSAC cornerback in 2012 and has recorded 172 career tackles and four interceptions.
 
PASS ATTACK: Dating back to 2011, Kutztown has thrown 30 or more pass attempts in 20 of its last 22 games.
 
PSAC PRESEASON POLL: The Golden Bears were right in the middle of the pack, slotted fifth of eight teams in the Eastern Division.
