Spring Sports

The team MVP for 2014 softball is senior outfielder Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township). Hetzler hit with a .283 batting average on the season with 43 hits and a team-high eight stolen bases. On a larger note, she set the program's all-time record by taking a hit-by-pitch 34 times in her career, including 13 this year. That single-season total ranks second in program history. Furthermore, she became the 10th player in program history to reach the 200-hit plateau for her career. Hetzler also provided some of the most vocal leadership for the Golden Bears this season.

The Coaches Award this year goes to fellow senior outfielder Stephanie Curry (Winchester, VA/Millbrook). This year, Curry played the role of team leader and late-inning hero. Curry hit with a .222 batting average, but two of her hits came at big moments. She gave the Golden Bears a win in Florida during the Spring Break trip with a walk-off RBI single and she hit a game-tying two-out two-run double on Senior Day to send the first game of a doubleheader to extra innings.

This year, the winner of the women's lacrosse MVP is senior goalkeeper JoAnn McLaughlin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape). In the team's 16 games, McLaughlin stopped 45.6 percent of shots she faced. She finished third in the PSAC with 162 saves on the year. She led the conference with 10.13 saves per game.

The Coaches Award goes to junior attack Jillian Spencer (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township). Spencer led the team with 34 goals on the year, a total that ranks seventh in a single season in Kutztown lacrosse history. Her 38 draw controls ranks fourth in a single season since 2008. This season, the men's tennis MVP is junior Varun Desai (Mumbai, India/K.C. College). Desai won a career-high 18 singles matches this year on his way to a 18-2 record, 5-0 in PSAC matches. Primarily a No. 2 singles player, Desai was the 2013 Singles Champion at the Individual Championships in September, and repeats as a two-time All-PSAC Singles and Doubles player.

The Coaches Award goes to senior Bilawal Suri (Kolkata, India/Calcutta International). As a four-year player in the program, Suri developed as a true team leader. He owns a 6-3 singles record and an 8-6 doubles record in his Kutztown men's tennis career. He took his leadership role for the last two years very seriously and led by example, always doing everything – plus more – that was asked from him. He also took the role of assisting on the courts during matches. He is positive and disciplined.

The MVP of the women's team is junior Hannah Pipkin (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield). Monday morning, Pipkin was named the PSAC East Athlete of the Year for women's tennis. Furthermore, she earned All-PSAC East honors for both singles and doubles. Pipkin finished the year 14-6 in singles play and 9-11 in doubles play. More importantly, Pipkin went 5-1 in singles and 5-1 in doubles from the top flight in PSAC East action to help send the Golden Bears to the conference playoffs.

The Coaches Award recipient this season is sophomore Chelsea Davis (Spring City, Pa./Spring-Ford). At another point, she held an eight-match winning streak in doubles. Davis is a good role model and motivator.

With a 25-0 record, Haddad put together only the second undefeated season by a Golden Bear wrestler. He was the top-ranked Division II heavyweight wrestler all year, clearly justifying him to win the NCAA Division II National Wrestler of the Year award. He became the first PSAC wrestler to achieve this amazing honor.

In her first year as a starter in goal, Denlinger performed well by allowing just 3.37 goals on average and saving 72.6 percent of shots faced.
