Kutztown Men’s Tennis Downed by Edinboro in PSAC Final

Edinboro 5, Kutztown 3 (HTML Box Score)

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's tennis team was hoping to repeat as Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) champions, but Edinboro University avenged last year's title match with a 5-3 victory Friday afternoon in the Championship match from South Campus Courts in West Chester.

Kutztown (13-5) took down Edinboro (17-8) 6-3 to kick off the conference season earlier this spring. The two teams also met in last year's final, where Kutztown pulled out a 5-2 victory.

The Fighting Scots did not let that happen again this time around, starting off with a 2-1 advantage coming out of doubles play. For KU, Rushi Amin (Orefield, PA/Lake Brantley) and Varun Desai (Mumbai, India/K.C. College) pulled out a 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles to record their 17th on the season. The duo has racked up 29 total doubles victories over the past two seasons, which ties them for third all-time in school history. Edinboro took the No. 2 doubles match, 8-4, and the third doubles flight, 8-3.

The Golden Bears needed solid singles play if they were to mount the comeback, but fell short with two points. Amin squared off against Matias Aignasse at No. 1 singles, sweeping the first set 6-0, and battling for a 7-5 win in the second set to take the top singles match. KU's final win came at No. 6 singles, where Ben Nace (Spring Grove, Pa./Delone Catholic) defeated Raffaele Fusulan in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-1).

Edinboro took the second, fourth, and fifth singles matches, with the No. 3 match halted in the third set.

The Maroon and Gold will first wrap up the regular season by traveling to Philadelphia on Wednesday, April 23 for a non-conference matchup with the University of the Sciences at 3 p.m.

Without the automatic bid that comes with the PSAC title, Kutztown's Atlantic Regional Tournament hopes are now in the hands of the selection committee. The top seven teams are slated to make the field this year, which will be announced during the NCAA selection show on Tuesday, April 29 at 8 p.m. on www.NCAA.com. KU was ranked fifth in the most recent regional rankings.
