Kutztown 5, West Chester 0 (HTML Box Score)

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – In a first-to-five format, the Kutztown University men's tennis team only needed five matches to secure the victory over West Chester University on Thursday afternoon in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Semifinals from South Campus Courts.

Fifth-ranked Kutztown (13-4) came into the postseason as the top seed after going undefeated in conference play throughout the regular season. West Chester (5-10) grabbed the final spot with the fourth seed.

The Golden Bears got the ball rolling right from the get go with a 3-0 sweep in doubles play. The one and three squads won by comfortable scores; 8-1 & 8-4, respectively. The No. 2 doubles team battled for their victory. Tied at 8-8, Kutztown triumphed in a seven-point tiebreaker to take the match (7-3).

Up 3-0 heading into singles, the Maroon and Gold only needed two victories in singles competition to move on to the Championship. Senior Rushi Amin (Orefield, PA/Lake Brantley) rolled through Jared Howat 6-1, 6-2 at the top singles flight to keep the momentum going. At No. 3 singles, junior Matthew Maguire took down Chaz Irwin 6-1, 6-4 for KU's fifth win to call the match.

Varun Desai (Mumbai, India/K.C. College) (No. 2), Rich Lichtenwalner (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) (No. 5), and Ben Nace (Spring Grove, Pa./Delone Catholic) (No. 6) all secured first set victories and were leading in the second set before the match was called.

Kutztown will now square off against second-seeded Edinboro University in the PSAC Championship, tomorrow, April 18 at 12 p.m. from South Campus Courts in West Chester. KU is hoping to defend its conference crown against the Fighting Scots. Kutztown defeated EU 5-2 in last year's final and 6-3 earlier this spring in the regular season.
