HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Kutztown University men's tennis team kept the streak alive Thursday with a 7-2 victory over Asbury University, while the women's program suffered a tight 5-4 loss to Goucher College that came down to the final tiebreaker at the PTR Spring TennisFest.
The men's team (6-1) has gone 4-0 so far during its spring break tournament. Against Asbury, the Golden Bears started off with two points from double play.
Rushi Amin (Orefield, PA/Lake Brantley) and
Varun Desai (Mumbai, India/K.C. College) dropped an 8-4 decision at No. 1 doubles, but the No. 2 and 3 squads picked up the slack.
Rich Lichtenwalner (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and
Ben Nace (Spring Grove, Pa./Delone Catholic) brought home an 8-2 victory in the second slot, while the duo of
Ken Beebe (Landenberg, Pa./Kennett) and Matthew Maguire won 8-6 at No. 3 to win their fifth in a row together this spring.
McGuire, Lichtenwalner, and Nace each picked up their second win of the match in singles competition, where the Golden Bears won five of six to bring home the victory. McGuire defeated Stephen Woods in a tiebreaker at No. 3 (4-6, 6-3, 10-3), Lichtenwalner won handily at No. 5 (6-1, 6-1), and Nace wrapped up singles play in the six spot with a 6-7, 6-2, 10-6 victory over Deuce Gibson.
Desai got a win at No. 2 over Nesbert Vaval (6-0, 6-3), and
Patricio Hernandez (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Vista Hermosa) made a statement at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Daniel Harris.
On the women's side, the Golden Bears (3-4) suffered its first setback of the tournament that came down to the final tiebreaker.
Since being paired up together last October, freshman
Alyssa Konas (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and sophomore
Chelsea Davis (Spring City, Pa./Spring-Ford) have gone 5-0 at the No. 2 doubles spot. The duo brought KU its only point in doubles competition against Goucher, securing an 8-6 decision.
Davis was the only double winner for Kutztown on Thursday, taking down Kirsten Cianci 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 singles spot.
Cynthia Good (Montrose, Pa./Elk Lake) and
Danielle Patterson (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) secured two much need victories at the No. 5 and 6 singles spots.
After the Golden Bears dropped the second and third flights of singles in straight sets, the match came down to the No. 1 singles bout to determine the victor.
Hannah Pipkin (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) got off to a strong start with a 6-2 first-set win. Her opponent Amanda Bercovici however, turned on the jets in the second set to win 7-5 and remained resilient in the tiebreaker with a 10-7 win to give Goucher the 5-4 victory.
Both squads will wrap up the tournament tomorrow, March 21 with matches against the University of Pikeville at 1:45 p.m.
