KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University men's tennis team was competitive throughout the afternoon but ultimately unable to grab a point off five-time defending PSAC champion Edinboro in a 7-0 defeat at the Keystone Courts, Friday.
The Golden Bears (5-9, 0-3 PSAC) won multiple games in all three doubles matches, including four from
Patrick Young (Belfast, Northern Ireland/) and
Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) in a 6-4 loss at No. 3 to Fabricio Sosa Pons and Duarte Correia who are ranked eighth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Atlantic Region rankings.
Young took Correia to a tiebreaker in both sets at third singles before falling 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2).
Kutztown showed resilience against the powerful Fighting Scots, who remain the team to beat in the league despite a 5-10 overall record. Edinboro improved to 3-0 in the PSAC with Friday's victory.
Robinson took eight games from Arsen Tabaldyev at fifth singles in a 7-5, 6-3 loss and
Terrell Arejola (Quezon City, Philippines/Southville International School and Colleges)Â won seven games at sixth singles in a 6-4, 6-3 defeat against Hassan Ammar.
Emiel Tidman topped
Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4, while
Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/) and
Henrique Rocha (Jaticua, Brazil/Escola SEB Maceio) suffered setbacks to regionally ranked opponents.
Nguyen faced top-ranked Leon Grassnickel at No. 1, where Grassnickel emerged with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Rocha fell to 11th-ranked Sosa Pons 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.
Kutztown's next opportunity to get back in the win column comes next Wednesday, April 15, at home against Bloomsburg. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
