Kutztown secures first PSAC win, 5-2, at West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- The Kutztown University men's tennis team broke through with its first PSAC victory of the season in its penultimate match, 5-2, at West Chester on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Bears have been in a number of tightly contested matches throughout the league slate but left without a win to show for their efforts. That changed against the Golden Rams after KU won 2-of-3 in doubles and 4-of-6 singles flights.

Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) and Terrell Arejola (Quezon City, Philippines/Southville International School and Colleges) gave the visitors an early edge with a 6-3 win over Ashton Bunch and Zack Bull at second doubles. Kutztown's (6-10, 1-4 PSAC) third pairing of Patrick Young (Belfast, Northern Ireland/) and Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) followed with a 6-4 win against Alessandro Melotti and Nico Pascale to earn their team the doubles point for the third time in five PSAC matches.

Head coach Pete Smith's squad was on the precipice of victory after Perez topped Thomaz Joly 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles and Raphael Hoareau Lebon (Saint-Joseph, Réunion/) defeated Pascale 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 to make it 3-0 Golden Bears.

West Chester (5-10, 1-4 PSAC) got on the board with Melotti's 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2, but Robinson locked up the match for KU with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Anthony Abbott at No. 5.

Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/) staved off Bunch 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 to earn the Golden Bears' final point.

Patrick Young (Belfast, Northern Ireland/) overcame a first set loss to force a super tiebreaker at No. 3, but came up just short against Juan Pablo Beirana-Guzman 6-4, 4-6, 10-3.

Kutztown will look to ride the momentum from Tuesday's win into its season finale against Chestnut Hill Thursday, April 23, at 3 p.m., at the Keystone Courts.
