HILTON HEAD, S.C. – While the town of Kutztown experienced typical spring showers on Wednesday, the Kutztown University men's and women's tennis teams continued to thrive on their spring break trip with a pair of wins against Illinois Springfield. KU's women won by a 8-1 final, while the men won 6-3.
On the women's side, the Golden Bears (3-3) put together a near-flawless match against Illinois Springfield (2-8), as four players had double-wins in both singles and doubles play.
Hannah Pipkin (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) and
Tori Zander (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) opened the top-flight of doubles with a 8-3 win to set the tone. At No. 2 doubles, freshman
Alyssa Konas (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), this week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Athlete of the Week, and
Chelsea Davis (Spring City, Pa./Spring-Ford) won their fourth straight match, this by a 8-0 final. It is also their second consecutive straight-set win.
Cynthia Good (Montrose, Pa./Elk Lake) and
Erika Diffendall (Mountville, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) improved to 3-0 as a doubles team this season with a 8-1 final at No. 3 doubles.
Each of Kutztown's five singles wins came in straight sets. Patterson, Pipkin, Davis and Konas each won their third straight match on Wednesday.
For the men, two doubles teams remained undefeated on the season. As a team, KU (4-1) is 17-3 in doubles matches. At the top flight,
Rushi Amin (Orefield, PA/Lake Brantley) and
Varun Desai (Mumbai, India/K.C. College) moved to 8-0 this year with an 8-2 win. The team of
Ken Beebe (Landenberg, Pa./Kennett) and Matthew Maguire at No. 3 doubles won their fifth match in as many tries with a matching 8-2 win. KU took two of the three doubles matches.
Amin and Maguire won twice on Wednesday by winning both of their singles and doubles matches. Amin won his fourth straight match at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory, and has responded well after dropping his first two singles matches of the fall season. Maguire earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles as well.
Desai suffered a rare setback at No. 2 singles, his first of the season in fact. He dropped a tough 7-5, 7-6 decision, but had the support of his teammates to pick him up.
Rich Lichtenwalner (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) earned a tiebreaking win at No. 5 singles. He won all six points in the opening set, dropped a 3-6 second set, but responded with a 10-8 win in the final set.
Ben Nace (Spring Grove, Pa./Delone Catholic) also won in singles action and is tied with Amin for the second-most wins on the team with four this season. Desai leads the squad with his 8-1 mark.
Both teams play again on Thursday, March 20, but against different teams. The women face off against Goucher for a 8:30 a.m. start, and the men square off against Asbury at 11 a.m.
