GREENSBURG, Pa. – Besides two forfeits at 133 pounds, the Kutztown University wrestling team was perfect in both matches at the McKenna Center Saturday afternoon, taking down host Seton Hill University and Alderson Broaddus University.
Mitch Voelker (Shoemakersville, PA/Schuylkill Valley),
Jackson Stabile (Lenhartsville, Pa./Hamburg),
Bo Candelaria (Reading, Pa./Middletown), and
Giovanni Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) were all two-match winners on Saturday to help improve Kutztown to 10-4 on the season.
The opening match against Seton Hill got off to a strange 6-6 start, with KU getting the forfeit win at 125 and Seton Hill doing the same at 133 pounds. Voelker (141), Stabile (149), and Ortiz (184) earned three points each with wins by decision. After a forfeit win at 157, Candelaria (165) took care of business with a 13-0 major decision to put KU up 22-6. The Golden Bears capped off the win in dominant fashion, receiving a pin (4:37) from
Andrew Kinney (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) at 174, an 11-2 major decision from
Brandan Clark (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) at 197, and another pin (1:56) from top-ranked heavyweight
Ziad Haddad (Orefield, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (North Carolina)) for the 41-6 victory.
The Maroon and Gold then hit the mat with Alderson Broaddus University for the second time this season. KU kicked off the 2013-14 campaign against the Battlers at the Terrapin Duals, winning 47-3.
Nick Lamoreaux (Bethesda, MD/Milton Hershey) got things started for Kutztown at 125, winning by an 8-4 decision. KU forfeited at 133 again, putting Alderson Broaddus up 6-3 and giving Kutztown its first deficit of the day. Voelker changed that quickly, giving KU five points with a 17-2 (5:55) technical fall. Stabile earned a 3-1 victory with riding time at 149, followed by
Matt Martoccio (Kintnersville, Pa./Council Rock South) securing his first pin (4:22) of the season in the 157-pound bout. Candelaria,
Andrew Wesner (York, PA/Central York), and Ortiz all recorded decisions to put KU up 26-6. With the Battlers forfeiting the 285-pound match,
Erik Dejonge (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) concluded the action in an exciting manner, earning his first pin (2:37) of the season in the 197-pound match.
Kutztown will return home next Friday, Feb. 14, to battle Shippensburg University on Senior Night.
