BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's tennis team experienced a range of glorious triumphs and unexpected disappointments in the opening day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Individual Championships held at Bloomsburg University.
The big story of the day was Mercyhurst's sophomore Travis Beck, who pulled off a stunning 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 super-break upset over top-seeded singles player and reigning PSAC Athlete of the Year
Rushi Amin (Orefield, PA/Lake Brantley) from Kutztown. Amin was the champion of the event a year ago.
However, the Maroon and Gold still have a presence in Sunday's semifinal match as second-seeded junior
Varun Desai (Mumbai, India/K.C. College) will take on the fourth seed, Robert Rizea from Mercyhurst at 10 a.m. Desai eased past Edinboro's Kody Duncan (6-1, 6-0) in the first round, but had a tougher time with Edinboro's Bruno Borja in the second round, taking it to a second-set tie-breaker (6-3, 7-6 (7-0)).
Matthew Maguire also participated in the singles tournament for the Golden Bears, taking down West Chester's Connor Dunn in the first round (6-4, 6-3) before falling to Rizea in a super tie-breaker (2-6, 6-2, 5-10).
KU sent two pairs to compete in the doubles competition. Defending PSAC Doubles Champions and top-seeded Amin and Desai defeated Rizea and Beck from Mercyhurst 8-3, before taking down fellow-teammates Maguire and
Rich Lichtenwalner (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) 8-5 to reach Sunday's doubles final. Maguire and Lichtenwalner defeated Tucker Mertz and Kevin Tran of Millersville 8-2 in the first round.
Amin and Desai are scheduled to defend their doubles title Sunday at 8:30 a.m. against the second-seeded Bloomsburg pair of Mike DiSanto and Denis Ikeriji. Desai will also face-off against Rizea in the singles semi-final at 10 a.m.
