COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Kutztown University wrestling squad began its season on Sunday with a 2-1 trip at the University of Maryland's Terrapin Duals.
 
The Golden Bears suffered a 35-0 sweep by Division I Maryland, but pulled out two victories over Johns Hopkins (27-16) and Alderson Broaddus (47-3) throughout the day.
 
KU took an early 20-0 lead over Alderson Broaddus. Redshirt freshman Tom Traxler (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) earned the pin at 125 in his first collegiate bout, while Jackson Stabile (Lenhartsville, Pa./Hamburg) did the same at 149 with a fast fall of 2:08. Matt Benvenuto (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) and Mitch Voelker (Shoemakersville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) each scored by major decision for KU at 133 and 141, respectively.
 
Alderson Broaddus would score its only points with a 7-5 decision at 157.
 
Kutztown would gather up the remainder of the points. Justin Heller (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) won by a 10-0 major decision at 165, while Andrew Kinney (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) scored on a tech fall at 174. KU solidified the win with three straight pins. Brandan Clark (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) got the pin at 197, while the Ortiz brothers each recorded fast falls. Giovanni Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) won his bout in 2:31 at 184, while Daniel Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) won in 2:58 at the heavyweight class.
 
The Johns Hopkins match did not start as smoothly. JHU jumped out to a 13-0 lead with a pin at 125, a major decision at 133, and a win by decision at 141.
 
Jackson Stabile (Lenhartsville, Pa./Hamburg) would get Kutztown on the board with a 4-1 win by decision at 149 pounds. In his only action of the day, Nick Lospinoso (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) capitalized by grabbing a 5-3 win by decision at 157. The same goes for Andrew Wesner (York, PA/Central York), as he followed suit with a win by fast fall (1:18) at 165 to bring the match within one point.
 
JHU would score its final points of the match at 174, winning by a 7-5 decision over Bo Candelaria (Reading, Pa./Middletown).
 
Down 16-12, Kutztown won the last three bouts to secure the victory. Giovanni Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) won by a close 2-1 decision at 184 pounds to bring the match back within one point. Clark locked down his second pin of the day at 197, giving Kutztown its first lead of the match (21-16). Daniel Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) would solidify the victory for KU, recording his second pin on the day at 285 pounds.
