KUTZTOWN, Pa. –The Kutztown University women's soccer team defeated Mercyhurst University 7-1 Saturday afternoon in its final regular season game at Keystone Field, after honoring its two seniors
Katie Oliveri (Mifflinburg, PA/Mifflinburg) and
Alina Rakiewicz (Denver, PA/Cocalico).
The Golden Bears' (12-5, 11-5 PSAC) seven goals were the most since they scored seven in a season-opening shutout against Concord in 2010.
In the 26th minute of play,
Morgan Higgins (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) scored the first goal for KU on an assist from
Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) after the Lakers goalkeeper lost control of the ball, giving opportunity to Higgins to put it in the back of the net.
At 37:41, Katelynn Jaxheimer utilized a powerhouse shot to drive the ball in for the second goal for KU from the center top of the box. Jaxheimer scored the following goal as well, using another accurate shot from just within the box to lift KU to a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
Just six minutes into the second half,
Logan Kramer (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor (Arkansas State)) headed in the fourth goal for KU off of a corner kick by Higgins.
In the 66th minute, Kramer sent the ball wide where Costello took a shot from 10 yards out to score the fifth goal for KU.
Mercyhurst finally answered KU's fifth goal with their fifth shot of the game at 74:22. Kristina Roberti headed in a high pass from Stephanie Drago, sending the ball around KU goalkeeper
Jess Campbell (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley).
Megan Frailer (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) answered the Lakers' goal with an additional two, the first of which was assisted by Costello in the 81st minute. She then scored the seventh and final goal for KU with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game.
Kutztown finished the game with 19 shots, nine of which were on goal, to Mercyhurst's total of seven.
Costello now leads the Golden Bears with 22 points from six goals and 10 assists, followed by Frailer with 20 points from seven goals and six assists.
The Golden Bears return to action Tuesday, Nov. 5 to compete in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships at Keystone Field with the visiting team to still be determined.
