Women's Soccer Puts An End To Edinboro's Unbeaten Streak

Box Score

Kutztown 2, Edinboro 1 (HTML Box Score) | NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Atlantic Poll

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University women's soccer team defeated Edinboro University 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Keystone Field, after being ranked seventh in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Atlantic Poll released that afternoon.

However, the NCAA regional poll released later in the season will play the deciding factor in regional playoff seeding's.

The Golden Bears (9-5 overall, 9-5 PSAC) opened up the first half with a series of shots and corner kicks, keeping control of the offensive advantage. It led up to junior forward Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scoring her team-leading fifth goal for KU in the 17th minute when she made contact with the ball that ricocheted off the Edinboro goalkeeper.

The Fighting Scots (10-4-1, 8-4-1) hardened their defensive line to catch KU offside twice before finally moving the ball to the opposite end of the field. Lauralee Clements found an opportunity on a free kick just outside the top of the 18-yard box to take the first shot of the game for Edinboro, and score the first and only goal in the 39th minute.

The Golden Bears broke the tie just over two minutes later when Mariah Dimm (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) did not hesitate to a rip a shot into the goal from 25 yards out, scoring the second and final goal for KU and send the teams to halftime leading 2-1.

The Fighting Scots came out stronger in the second half of play, increasing their total shot count to six, but were unlucky in finding the back of the net again.

Costello led the KU offense with six of the total 13 shots, while goalkeeper Alina Rakiewicz (Denver, PA/Cocalico) finished with three saves.

The Golden Bears return to action on Monday, Oct. 28, when they host Alderson-Broaddus University at Keystone Field for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
