Second Half Surge Lifts IUP Over Golden Bears, 5-2

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Five second-half goals by Indiana (Pa.) led the Crimson Hawks to victory over the Kutztown University women's field hockey team on Saturday afternoon on University Field, 5-2. Seniors Emily Labowitz (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion) and Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) led the Golden Bears with one goal each.
 
In the first half of action, senior Karly Waltman (Birdsboro, PA/Twin Valley) stood tall for KU, blanking Indiana (Pa.) with eight saves as the Hawks outshot Kutztown, 10-3.
 
The intensity picked up from both teams in the second frame as all of the goals came after the break. The Hawks jumped out to an early two goal lead when Nicole Bruce and Dani Edwards scored to put them on top, 2-0. The Golden Bears would get on the board shortly after as Gregory found Labowitz in front of the net for the first KU goal at 23:10.
 
After a third IUP goal, Gregory answered back, scoring KU's second goal, making the score 3-2 with 18:45 on the clock. The Crimson Hawks would get a flurry of shots on goal in the final 15 minutes, scoring two more and putting the game out of reach as the game ended, 5-2, after 70 minutes of play.
 
The defensive put together an impressive performance as senior Amy Dando (Marysville, PA/Susquenita) and freshman Rayann Fink (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) combined to make five defensive saves for the Maroon and Gold.
 
Recording the win for IUP was Brittany Varacello who improves to 3-0 on the year while Waltman falls to 2-4, picking up the loss in a 13-save effort.
 
The Crimson Hawks outshot the Golden Bears, 27-7, while the penalty corners were even at six apiece.
 
The Golden Bears will regroup and hit the road for their next two as they travel to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. start and LIU Post on Friday for a 3:00 p.m. start.
