KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The nation's No. 1-ranked team kept rolling Wednesday night, as Kutztown University field hockey secured its fifth straight win with a 4-1 victory over Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) at Andre Reed Stadium.
Marissa Rice (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) led the Golden Bears (5-0) with a two-goal performance, accounting for half of KU's scoring. Her first came in the closing seconds of the opening quarter, when
Jade Traynor (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) slipped her a backhanded pass off a corner rebound that Rice maneuvered past the goalkeeper.
Kutztown doubled its lead early in the second quarter when
Jessica Traynor (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) finished off a penalty corner set piece from
Marlee Fetrow (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone). IUP (3-1) responded five minutes before halftime with its lone goal of the night, cutting the margin to 2-1.
The Golden Bears quickly regained control after the break. Just over three minutes into the third quarter, Fetrow set up Rice on another corner to restore the two-goal cushion. KU capped the scoring later in the period when
Olivia Kirkpatrick (Annville, Pa./Palmyra) converted a penalty stroke, awarded after
Erin Gonzalez (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) was fouled while cutting around the Crimson Hawks' keeper.
It was a physical contest, with IUP earning two green cards and applying heavy contact throughout the match. Still, the Bears dictated play, outshooting the Crimson Hawks 12-7 and holding a decisive 17-0 edge in penalty corners.
Goalkeeper
Tess Adolf (Lawrence, N.J./Lawrence) was tested more than in KU's previous three games combined, making four saves to backstop the win.
Kutztown will look to extend its unbeaten streak Friday, Sept. 17, when it hosts D'Youville at Andre Reed Stadium.
