KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Junior
Jessica Traynor (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) delivered both goals, including the overtime winner, as the No. 2-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team edged Millersville 2-1 Wednesday night at Andre Reed Stadium to secure its seventh straight victory.
The Golden Bears' (7-0) perfect start is their best since 2007, when they opened with 10 consecutive wins — a program mark KU is now chasing. Wednesday's contest proved to be its tightest matchup so far.
After three scoreless quarters, both teams broke through in the fourth. Traynor, normally stationed in the midfield but sitting deeper in defense throughout the evening, broke the deadlock with just under seven minutes to play when she deflected an aerial pass from
Erin Gonzalez (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) into the cage.
Millersville (3-3) answered less than three minutes later, tying the contest at 56:11 to force overtime.
Just over three and a half minutes into the extra frame, Gonzalez sent a ball into the circle that was touched by
Marissa Rice (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) before finding Traynor, who buried her second of the night to lift KU to its first overtime win of the season.
The Bears outshot the Marauders and held the advantage in corners, while freshman goalkeeper
Tess Adolf (Lawrence, N.J./Lawrence) kept her unbeaten record intact with three saves.
Kutztown will begin PSAC play Saturday, traveling to Mansfield at 1 p.m., before closing the weekend with a non-conference matchup against Roberts Wesleyan on Sunday.
