Box Score KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Despite rallying from a three-goal deficit, the Kutztown University field hockey squad fell in an overtime thriller to No. 10 East Stroudsburg, 4-3, on Tuesday night at University field. Behm, Gregory and Reynolds all scored second-half goals to tie the game at three and send play into overtime.
East Stroudsburg started the scoring six minutes in with a goal from Lauren Ventrella off a stolen pass deep in KU territory. With the one-goal advantage, ESU's Ventrella went back to work, scoring her second goal which stretched the lead to two with 17 minutes left on the clock.
From there, Jessica Lawville scored the Warriors third goal as they carried a 3-0 lead into half. After the first 35 minutes of play, KU put eight shots on net as seven of them were redirected by Sarah Dobroskey.
After the break, the Golden Bears came out with an edge, looking to charge back. It took over 45 minutes of play but the Maroon and Gold finally found the back of the cage as
Emily Labowitz (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion) hit
Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) in front of the net to make the score 3-1.
Carrying the momentum, Kutztown fired three more shots before
Erin Reynolds (York, PA/Central York) tallied the team's second, cutting the lead to just one off a corner with 13:32 to play. In need of a tying goal,
Anna Behm (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) once again came through for the Golden Bears, knotting the score at three with just under five to play in regulation to send the contest into an extra frame.
In overtime, KU could not convert on two chances as East Stroudsburg's Becky Gagliardi scored the game-winner five minutes and 40 seconds in, making the final 4-3.
The Golden Bears have seen four of their matches go into extra time as they have had little luck, going 1-3 with all three losses on University Field. All three of those losses have come by a score of 4-3.
The Maroon and Gold controlled much of the game tallying 31 shots to the Warriors 14. It also held a large margin in penalty corners at 10-2.
ESU's Sarah Dobroskey picked up the win with 15 saves in net, improving to 4-7 on the year while Kutztown's
Kayla Denlinger (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) fell to 1-1 in just her fifth game.
Kutztown University will stay at home for its next contest against LIU Post. Game time is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
