Marissa Rice (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and two goal performance from junior
Ellie Myers (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) propelled top ranked Kutztown field hockey to a 7-0 victory over American International College on Saturday at Andre Reed Stadium.
The win kept the Golden Bears perfect at 9-0 as they move toward Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play, which begins next week.
Myers opened the scoring at 2:57 with an unassisted shot lifted inside the left post. Junior
Taylor Vaccaro (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) added to the lead later in the first quarter at 5:37, firing from the top of the circle and getting a deflection off an American International stick to make it 2-0.
The scoring slowed until the third quarter, when Myers tallied her second goal of the night at 33:50 by deflecting a shot from junior
Marlee Fetrow (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) on a corner. Rice then opened her scoring with a rebound, putting an initial shot off the goalkeeper's pads and into the cage at the 37 minute mark. Sophomore
Julia Traynor (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) capped the third-quarter scoring with a hard shot to the right side at 43:33, giving Kutztown a 5-0 lead after 45 minutes.
Junior
Lorelai Lehenky (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) started in goal for Kutztown and played the first 45 minutes before sophomore
Tess Adolf (Lawrence, N.J./Lawrence) took over for the final 15. Neither goalkeeper was forced to make a save. The Golden Bears dominated statistically, putting 25 of 27 shots on goal and earning 15 penalty corners while blanking the Yellow Jackets in both categories.
Rice completed her hat trick in the fourth quarter, first lifting a shot into the cage off a corner at 47:02 before adding another high finish, assisted by freshman
Gwyn DeFazio (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) at 51:09. It marked Rice's second hat trick of the season.
Kutztown opens PSAC play next Saturday against IUP at noon at home.
