MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (October 1, 2011)—Junior Maria Borland (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown) of the Kutztown University women's soccer team knows a thing or two about pairs considering the fact that her identical twin sister, Stephanie Borland (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown) is also her teammate. Maria unleashed a pair of goals to help the Golden Bears shutout Millersville University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game on Saturday afternoon at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears (8-1 overall, 6-1 PSAC) are currently ranked 22nd in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 poll. The Mauraders fell to 5-4-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the PSAC. The last time that Millersville defeated Kutztown was on September 16, 2006, when MU won 1-0 at Keystone Field.

M. Borland scored her first goal in the 33rd minute from freshman Bella Jaffin (Nescopeck, PA/Berwick Area). M. Borland connected with junior Crystal Zerbe (Myerstown, PA/Tulpehocken) early in the second half to give Kutztown the 2-0 lead.

"The girls did an excellent job executing the game plan and both goals were a result of things we did this week in training," Kutztown University head coach Erik Burstein said. "The first goal was fantastic. In the second half we did a much better job with our pressure and that really made a difference."

M. Borland has been integral for the Golden Bears this season. She leads the team in goals with eight and has one assist. She has accumulated 17 points and also leads Kutztown in shot percent (.533). This is M.Borland's third multi-goal game of the season.

The Golden Bears are currently on a four-game winning streak and are 4-0 on the road. KU has recorded three consecutive shutouts and has six on the year. The last time an oppenent scored on KU this season was Indiana (Pa.) on Sept. 17.

Kutztown outshot Millersville 10-6. Goalkeeper Casey Behrendt (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) recorded two saves and has 25 on the season. Goalie Ashley Matyasich had two saves on the day for the Mauraders.

As the season continues, Kutztown is proving in many reasons why it is one of the top competitors of the PSAC. KU is the only team in the PSAC that has not recorded a loss or tie in conference play.

The Golden Bears look to stay focused and continue its course through the PSAC when it hosts Shippensburg University on Friday, Oct. 7. Game time is set for 2 p.m. on Keystone Field.
