ERIE, PA (September 19, 2010)--The Kutztown University men's tennis team defeated Mercyhurst College 5-4 while the women's team dropped a 9-0 decision to undefeated Merychurst in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest. (Men's boxscore) (Women's boxscore)
KU is the reigning PSAC men's tennis champions and begin its season 1-0. The women's team falls to 0-2 overall.
The men's singles contest favored the Golden Bears as they won four out of six matches. Kaushik Das (KU) defeated Keith Whittingham, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Andrew Zhu defeated Adam Marnik, 6-1, 7-5. Cameron O'Donnell defeated Spencer Kilpatrick, 6-3, 6-2.Ronak Amalani defeated Eric Drusko, 7-5, 6-3.
In the men's doubles, Tim Roenning and Andrew Zhu (Toronto, ON/Northview) beat Eric Drusko and Spencer Kilpatrick, 8-4.
The rivalry between the KU men's tennis team and Mercyhurst is one that has much history. Last season, the Golden Bears beat the Lakers in the PSAC title game. The men's team would soon see Mercyhurst again, as it faced the Lakers at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament, where the Golden Bears would earn another victory.
Last season's success was complimented by KU's O'Donnell and Das. O'Donnell was named the PSAC East Freshman of the Year, and Das was named to all-PSAC team.
In the women's contest, the Golden Bears struggled to gain a win as the Lakers won all the matches in the morning's dual contest.
The Golden Bear women will get right back into action on Friday September 24, when they host La Salle University at 3:30 p.m. on the Keystone Courts.
The Golden Bear men will have a match this weekend against the College of New Jersey on Saturday.
