Doyle to finish freshman year among elite at the USATF Junior National Championships

KUTZTOWN, PA (June 22, 2010) – Freshman April Doyle will conclude a memorable year by competing in the United States Junior National Track and Field Championships beginning Thursday, June 24 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa's capital city. (CLICK FOR MEET INFORMATION)

 

Doyle will represent Kutztown and compete in the shot put Thursday afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m. Central Daylight Time. The meet is for those who are 19 and under that will not be turning 20 until 2011.

 

“This is a great way for April to cap off a phenomenal freshmen year,” Kutztown head women's track and field coach Ray Hoffman said. “Myself and the entire coaching staff are very proud of all she has done this year.”


Doyle was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Freshman Field Performer of the Year. She enjoyed a tremendous year for the Golden Bears. She won the shot put at both of the PSAC outdoor Championships with a toss of 44 feet, two inches and PSAC Indoor Championships with an effort of 43 feet, 1.75 inches.


In addition at the PSAC Outdoor championships, Doyle finished 10th in the discus throw (108-09) and placed 15th in the hammer throw (132-10). Her efforts helped Kutztown finish third overall at the PSAC championships, its best finish since 2007.


During the outdoor season, Doyle also won the shot put this season at the All-American Invitational, Paul Kaiser Invitational and was third in the Princeton Elite Meet. She threw the shot put a career best 45 feet, 3 inches at Princeton. Doyle was a NCAA provisional qualifier.


Greater Des Moines has a long and storied legacy as a track and field destination.  That legacy is being honored and solidified for generations to come with the unveiling of Track Central USA. In addition to serving as home of the Drake Relays, with more than 100 years of rich tradition, Greater Des Moines and Drake University, have hosted the 2007 NCAA Midwest Regional Outdoor Track and Field Championship, the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
