Golden Bear baseball splits doubleheader at Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. (March 8, 2010) - The Kutztown University baseball team split a pair of lopsided games with Catawba College on Monday afternoon. (Boxscores: Game 1 | Game 2)

The Golden Bears had numerous home runs and used a few multiple run innings to win the first game 12-6, while the Indians exploded for a huge sixth inning to take the second contest 18-4.

James Quigley lead the second inning off with a homer to left center to get KU on the board. Mike Dugan singled and advanced to third on a single by Jared Frey, who took second on a late throw to third. Dugan then crossed the plate on a ground out by Brad Stoudt.

In the third, Corey Buletza quickly worked his way around the bases with a single and moving up to second on a throwing error. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and was knocked in by a Shayne Houck single up the middle.

Mike Kacelowicz cranked a three run home run in the fourth, scoring Buletza and Cody Montz.

KU put up a five spot in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run triple by Frey and a solo shot to right by Stoudt, the first of his collegiate career.

Trailing 12-0 after four and half innings, the Indians chipped away with a two-run homer in the fifth and manufacturing three runs in the sixth.

Adam Maini worked the first five innings, allowing four hits and two unearned runs. He struck out five and picked up his first win of the season.

In the second game, the Golden Bears trailed 5-4 heading into the sixth, but the Indians sent 18 batters to the plate and scored 13 times to hand KU its first defeat of the season.

The first four batters for KU reached base safely in the fourth, starting with a solo home run by Kacelowicz to left. Houck followed with a single and scored on a double in the right center gap by Quigley.

The Golden Bears will continue their spring trip with a doubleheader on Tuesday against Lenoir-Rhyne College starting at 3 p.m.
