Baseball starts spring trip with doubleheader sweep at Shaw

RALEIGH, NC (March 6, 2010) - The Kutztown University baseball team swept a double dip, 13-5 and 11-6, with Shaw University on Saturday afternoon to begin its spring break trip throughout the state of North Carolina.

The Golden Bears were powered by 10 runs in the final three innings and took advantage of six Shaw errors to earn a 13-5 victory
in the first game. In a four run sixth inning, KU drew four walks and a single by Jeff Kistle knocked in two.

Senior Mike Kacelowicz provided plenty of support for the pitching staff with four runs scored. He had a single in his only recorded plate appearance.Current Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference player of the week Shayne Houck smacked two doubles and right fielder Mike Dugan had a triple.

Mike Bucklin picked up the mound win with 2 2/3 inning's of middle relief. Bucklin allowed two earned runs off of five hits and struck out four. Jordan Garcia finished off the game with one inning of hitless ball, striking out two.

In the second game, Tyler Persun did not allow a hit through 4 1/3 innings. He picked up his first win as a Golden Bear after allowing two runs, one hit and striking out five.
Jacob Schnee pitched a scoreless sixth inning, issuing one walk and striking out one.

"Our control has improved since the Builder Invitational," said head coach Chris Blum. "The pitching staff has really stepped it up as of late."

The offense belted out 11 hits and jumped all over Shaw in the first three innings. The Golden Bears scored four, two and three in the first three innings. Freshman Brandon Shurr swung a big bat with two home runs and three RBIs. Bucklin smacked his first collegiate home run and just his second hit since his freshman season.

Jared Frey knocked in two runs in the first and Todd Rubendall went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Golden Bears will continue their spring trip with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Catawba, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne on Monday and Mars Hill on Tuesday.
