ERIE, PA (March 26, 2010) – The Kutztown University men's tennis team edged Mercyhurst College, 5-4, in a thriller Friday afternoon.
The Golden Bears won two out of three doubles matches and half of the six singles matches to raise their overall record to 4-2. It was Kutztown's third consecutive victory. Meanwhile, Mercyhurst's record slips to 7-8 overall.
Cameron O'Donnell and Asok Mukherjee led the Golden Bears. They teamed up at No. 3 doubles to claim an 8-5 victory. Each player as prevailed in their singles matches. O'Donnell prevailed at No. 6 singles by easily beating Justin Thompkins, 6-1, 6-0. Meanwhile, Mukherjee had the performance of the match by outlasting Ron Huerich in three grueling sets, 7-3, 3-6, 11-8.
Jonathan Goulet earned a huge victory at No. 2 singles, defeating Mijo Cotic, 6-2, 6-3. Goulet's victory proved crucial to Kutztown's success. His effort was needed because the Golden Bears lost three singles' matches.
Kutztown's top doubles tandem of Arpit Sharma and Kaushik Das earned a hard-fought 8-5 victory. Sharma lost his singles match in three sets.
Kutztown returns to action Tuesday afternoon when it hosts West Chester in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match starting at 2:30 p.m.
