Golden Bears come up short in DH against Shippensburg

KUTZTOWN, PA (March 20, 2010) – The Kutztown University baseball team dropped a pair of games against Shippensburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader Saturday afternoon. Playing its home opener, Kutztown fell by scores of 2-1 and 5-3 in extra innings. (GAME 1 BOXSCORE) / (GAME 2 BOXSCORE)

In both games, Kutztown (11-5 overall, 1-3 PSAC East) scored its runs in the first inning on a Mike Dugan hit. His single in the first game plated Shayne Houck with KU's lone run. With the bases loaded in the second game, Dugan slammed a triple to the right field corner that scored Mike Kacelowicz, Houck and James Quigley.

Dugan extended his hitting streak to 11 games. It was also his eighth multi-hit game of the season and fifth game this year with multiple runs batted in.

Unfortunately for the Golden Bears; that was all of their offense in the second game. Kutztown could not hold off Shippensburg despite having its leadoff runner reach base in five consecutive innings (fourth through the eighth). Quigley and Brad Stoudt paced the Golden Bears' offense with two hits each in the second game.

The Red Raiders scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to improve their overall record to 7-16 and conference mark to 3-1.

In the opening game, Kutztown pitcher Nathan Reed struck out seven batters during a solid complete game performance. In addition to Dugan; Quigley and Corey Buletza had the Golden Bears' other hits in the opening game. Kutztown's 1-0 lead lasted until the third inning when Shippensburg scored twice.

Trailing 2-1 in the first contest, Quigley, who extended his hitting streak to five games, led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double. However, despite being at third base with one out, Quigley was stranded. Kutztown had the potential tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Kutztown returns to action Sunday afternoon when it visits Chestnut Hill College in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
