NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: Jeppesen adds another school record to her resume at NCAA Championships

FRIDAY RESULTS

CANTON, Ohio – Steph Jeppesen (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) is wrapping up an unforgettable career as a Kutztown University women's swimmer. The senior sports management and coaching major is turning the 2010 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships into her own personal record book. For the fifth time in three days, Jeppesen erased another school record.

In finishing third in the finals of the 100-yard breaststroke, Jeppesen broke her school record she set earlier in the day in the preliminary round. Jeppesen finished her race in 1 minute, 3.23 seconds, which was .22 faster than she swam earlier in the afternoon.

"I was pretty nervous in the beginning of the race because I knew that any of us could win it," Jeppesen said. "I knew I had to get out fast. I went out as fast as I could. Unfortunately, during the last 25 yards, my feet started to cramp up and my body was definitely feeling it. Overall, I was seeded third going into the race and that's where I finished, so I am happy about that."

Last year, Jeppesen finished ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke at the NCAA championships. She credits her improved training regimen for helping her reach new heights. In addition, having her teammates with her in Ohio has been a huge help for her. The records have caught her by surprise.

"It hasn't set in yet," Jeppesen said of her effort. "After tomorrow and I get home and have time to think about, it probably will set in. I didn't expect to do this well. I moved up quite a bit from last season."

On Wednesday, Jeppesen set a school record in the 200-individual medley (2:03.46). Thursday, Jeppesen set school records in the 400-individual medley (4:33.39) and Jeppesen teamed with Nikki Hinsdale (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin), Alison Sheely and Jordan Shapiro (Yardville, N.J./Princeton) to place 18th in the 400-yard medley relay in a record-setting time of 3:56.49.

Also, senior Heather Wolkom (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Regional ) was 13th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.55). The Golden Bears' 800-yard free relay of Shapiro, Hinsdale, Alexandra Crigler (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and Wolkom earned honorable mention All-American status after swimming 7:46.68 Friday afternoon. Wolkom, who swam 5:05.43 in the prelims, also earned honorable mention All-American accolades after her performance in the finals.

Jeppesen concludes her sterling career Saturday when she swims in the 200-yard breaststroke. The morning session begins at 10:30 a.m.

"I am glad that everybody did well in their events too," Jeppesen said. "I am glad my teammates are here and we're having a lot of fun. Swimming here has been the best four years of my life and I will never forget it. I learned a lot."
