Kutztown defeated by IUP, 1-0 in final seconds

KUTZTOWN, PA (October 9, 2010)--The Kutztown University field hockey team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Indiana (Pa.) in a non-conference game Saturday morning on University Field. (BOXSCORE)
KU (5-4 overall) is fifth in this week's 2010 Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II National Coaches Poll.

After a scoreless first half, both teams applied pressure. Kutztown tried to take advantage of its numerous scoring opportunities, but IUP made the most of its only chance. Jillian Guild's goal in the 68th minute proved to be the difference. Guild's shot was assisted by Anouk Sickman off a penalty corner.

The Golden Bears would not give up without a fight. With a minute remaining, Kutztown received a penalty corner. Golden Bear Abbey Sheeler took her place and KU prepared for the final seconds of the game. Sheeler's pass was quick and forceful, but IUP's defense stopped the ball.
The Golden Bears' second half performance was stronger than its first half effort. KU outshot IUP 6-1 in the second half. Kutztown was limited to one shot in the first half.

Leading  KU's offense was Erin Reynolds with two shots. Jenna Gregory, Emily Labowitz, Megan West, Amy Dando, and Elly Skinner all had one shot.
KU goalie Emily Falko (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) had two saves and Katie Brautigan (Bernville, PA/Tulpehocken) recorded a defensive save. The Golden Bears are ranked second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in defensive saves.
Kutztown will return to action next Saturday, October 16. The Golden Bears will host Limestone at 9 a.m. on University Field.
