Volleyball takes step forward with win over Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, PA (October 30, 2010) – The Kutztown University volleyball team earned a split decision at Millersville University in a tri-match at Pucillo Gymnaiusm.

 

The Golden Bears defeated Millersville University, 3-1, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match and dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Alderson-Broaddus in the nightcap. (MILLERSVILLE BOX) / (ALDERSON-BROADDUS BOX)

 

“We got done what we needed to get done today, which was to win a PSAC match,” Kutztown head coach John Gump said. “It would have been nice to win the second match, but going five after a tough match with Millersville is a tough task.”

 

In the victory of Marauders, the Golden Bears (19-9 overall, 9-8 PSAC East) took a step forward to hosting a possible PSAC quarterfinal match by riding the dominant performances of Cali Snell and Katie Lutz. Snell contributed 10 kills as the Golden Bears won 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-16. Lutz, the reigning PSAC player of the week, had a double-double with a game-high 11 kills and 10 blocks.

 

Erin Kissling finished with nine kills. Cait Hess and Kelsey Nester contributed eight kills each for Kutztown, which beat Millersville twice this season. Kimberlee Gomber had a nice time setting everybody up with 20 assists. Jamie Celia collected 21 digs for the Golden Bears.

 

In the match against A-B, the Golden Bears battled hard before falling 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 15-11. Hess was Kutztown's leader with 10 kills. Confer contributed nine kills. Snell finished her afternoon with eight kills and Nester added seven kills.

 

Chynna Gehman recorded a career high 11 digs for the Golden Bears. Lindsey Smith had a season-high 26 digs. The tandem of Gomber and Wright combined for 43 assists against A-B.

 

Kutztown concludes its regular season schedule next weekend with a trip to East Stroudsburg University Friday night at 7 p.m. and Lock Haven Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
