KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- With heavy hearts, the Kutztown University women's swim team had an inspiring 149-105 win over Millersville in an emotional home finale at Keystone Pool on Saturday afternoon.
Before the meet began,
Lindsay Currie (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon),
Steph Jeppesen (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and
Heather Wolkom (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Regional ) were honored with a Senior Day celebration. The trio received flowers and had nice words said about them.
"I am very glad to honor these girls with a senior day celebration," said head coach
Tim Flannery. "This is not an easy sport to compete in for four years, they stuck with it though. It shows their perseverance, that is something that no one can ever take from them."
In addition, the entire Golden Bear team donned purple swim caps and took donations at the door in honor of freshman
Zoe Sianis' (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) mother, who passed away last Sunday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
"It is a good tradition that we started today," said Flannery. "I think it will help raise awareness and is a good cause for us to be a part of. It is something that we will do every year."
The win improved the Golden Bears record to 15-1 and marked Flannery's 100th career win as coach of the women's team. Overall he has compiled 164 wins between the men's and women's programs.
Jeppesen won the 100 breast (1:07.44) and 200 breast (2:24.59) and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team (1:52.83). She was also finally able to beat her KU pool record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.37.
"It was kind of a sad day, but exciting at the same time," said Jeppesen. "It is our last chance to compete in that pool and break records, so I was extremely happy when I broke the time in the 200."
Junior
Alexandra Crigler (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) broke the pool record in the 1,000 free, clocking in at 10:43.86. Wolkom was on Crigler's tail throughout the event, finishing at 10:44.53.
Wolkom also placed third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:14.00.
"I was really pumped up today with the atmosphere," said Wolkom. "As I was swimming I couldn't believe that this was the last time that I would be competing in this pool. I'm going to miss spending time with this group of girls, we had a lot of fun in and out of the pool."
Currie had a couple of 5th place finishes (100 and 200 breast) and helped her team finish third in the 200 medley relay.
"It was weird knowing this is my last home meet," said Currie. "I've been swimming since I was five years old and now it is coming to an end. I'm a really competitive person, I'm going to miss that as well as the being with the team."
Jeppesen was joined by
Allison Sheely (Enola, Pa./Trinity),
Nikki Hinsdale (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and
Jordan Shapiro (Yardville, N.J./Princeton) in the 200 medley relay. In addition to that win, Sheely and Hinsdale alternated first and third finishes in the 100 and 200 back. Sheely had the top time in the 100 back (1:02.70) and Hinsdale was third with 1:04.02. Hinsdale won the 200 back at 2:16.10 and Sheely placed third with a time of 2:19.51.
Shapiro and
Katie Kelly (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) finished alongside each other in the 50 free and 100 free. In the 50, Shapiro crossed the line second (25.96) followed by Kelly in third (26.68). In the 100, Shapiro was first (54.99), Kelly second (57.44) and
Rachel Lokken (Reading, Pa./Reading) completed the sweep at third (58.71).
Stephanie Kearns (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) and
Monica Fisher (Secane, Pa./Upper Darby) had a 1-2 punch in the 500 free, with times of 5:30.27 and 5:37.09, respectively. In the 200 fly,
Lauren Galetto (Vineland, N.J./Sacred Heart) (2:15.98) took first and
