SHIPPENSBURG, PA. (October 17, 2009) -- The Kutztown University women's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to eight and shutout string to seven by defeating Shippensburg University, 4-0, Saturday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match.
This was KU's 10th shutout this season, which is a new program standard. The previous shutout record was nine, which was established in 2005. In addition, the Golden Bears have not allowed a goal in 680 minutes. Freshman keeper Alyssa Hackelberg (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) added to her KU women's soccer record for most shutouts in a season with 10.
Kutztown (11-2-2 overall, 4-1 PSAC East) prepped for its Tuesday afternoon showdown against West Chester by getting goals from sophomore Chelsea Bressler (Cleona, PA/Annville-Cleona) (Cleona/Annville-Cleona), freshman Molly Cooper (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) (Palmyra/Palmyra), freshman Sarah Black (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) (Hershey/Lower Dauphin) and freshman Stephanie Barnett (Blandon, PA/Fleetwood) (Blandon/Fleetwood).
Junior Kelly Bushe (Neptune City, N.J./Neptune) (Neptune City, NJ/Neptune) and freshman Kelly Rozembersky (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) added assists for Kutztown, which is 3-0-1 on its current five-game road trip. The four goals are the most KU has scored since Sept. 22 when it scored six against Millersville.
Kutztown is ranked 16th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll and second in the Atlantic Region behind West Chester. Shippensburg, which tied KU 0-0 in its earlier meeting on Sept. 8, saw its season record slip to 5-7-2 overall and 2-4-2 in the PSAC East. It was the Red Raiders' third consecutive defeat.
The Golden Bears visits seventh-ranked West Chester in a game that begins at 3 p.m. It was originally scheduled for 1 p.m. but the time was changed. West Chester scored two goals in the second half to defeat Kutztown, 2-1, at Keystone Field on Sept. 15.
