HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 8, 2011) – The Kutztown University men's tennis team opened its spring break trip by defeating Malone College, 8-1, Tuesday evening.
Kutztown improved its overall record to 3-1 by sweeping all six singles matches. Leading the way for the Golden Bears in victory were junior Arijit Goswami (Kolkata, India/LSA Kolkata) and freshman Rushi Amin (Orefield, PA/Lake Brantley). Both players won their singles matches and teamed together for a victory at No. 2 doubles. Goswami and Amin each won the first set of their matches, 6-0, before being pushed in the second set.
Freshman Andrew Zhu (Toronto, ON/Northview) also earned a dominating, 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Cameron O'Donnell (Allentown, PA/Parkland), the 2010 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Freshman of the Year, also cruised to a straight sets triumph. Sophomore Darren Krout (Gordonville, PA/Pequea Valley) and freshman Tim Roenning (Hole, Norway/Norwegian College of Top Athletes) claimed an easy 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.
Setting the tone for Kutztown's victory were its top two singles tandem of Kaushik Das (Guwahati, Assam/National Open School) and Juan Gutierrez (San Jose, Costa Rica/SEK International School).
Kutztown returns to action Wednesday when it meets Wingate University at 3:00 p.m.
