Golden Bears drop match against Division I Lafayette

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Lafayette got the better of the Kutztown University men's tennis team for the second time this season, topping the Golden Bears by a 4-0 score at the Keystone Courts on Wednesday afternoon.

The NCAA Division I Leopards out of the Patriot League completed the season sweep after defeating KU, 5-2, in Easton, Pa., back on Sept. 30.

Lafayette (3-3) won all three doubles matches to gain secure a pivotal point and gain the early edge, though Kutztown (3-5) waged close battles at flights one and two. Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/) and Henrique Rocha (Jaticua, Brazil/Escola SEB Maceio) took the Leopards' Ricky Espaillat and Nick McKenzie to the wire in a 7-5 defeat at No. 1, while Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) and Terrell Arejola (Quezon City, Philippines/Southville International School and Colleges) fell by the same score against Jake Magnusson and Sam Gelber at No. 2.

The visitors gained three quick points in singles and the match was halted with the clinching team point, leaving three flights unfinished.

Magnusson beat Patrick Young (Belfast, Northern Ireland/) 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, John Dickens defeated Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 and McKenzie fended off Rocha 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2.

Kutztown's setback was its first in three matches and first this spring after opening the calendar year with a 4-3 win at Dickinson back on Feb. 28.

The Golden Bears will head to West Virginia in two weekends for non-conference matches against Division II foes Salem (Friday, March 20) and Fairmont State (Saturday, March 21).
