KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Kutztown University men's tennis honored seniors
Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) and
Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) during Friday's match against Muhlenberg and the duo did their part by picking up wins in singles and doubles as the Golden Bears earned a 7-0 victory.
The Maroon and Gold raced out to a 1-0 lead behind a doubles sweep.
Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/) and
Henrique Rocha (Jaticua, Brazil/Escola SEB Maceio) defeated Owen Dyer and Matt Miller 6-3 at No. 1, while
Patrick Young (Belfast, Northern Ireland/) and Robinson topped Max Gofton and Gabriel Tamarkin by the same score at No. 3.
KU (5-6) made it 3-for-3 in doubles with a 6-4 victory from Perez and
Terrell Arejola (Quezon City, Philippines/Southville International School and Colleges) at No. 2.
The Golden Bears used straight set wins at Nos. 3, 4, 6 and 5 to put the match out of reach.
Perez won his 23rd career singles match 6-1, 6-1 over Miller at No. 3. Young turned back Gofton 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2,
Raphael Hoareau Lebon (Saint-Joseph, Réunion/) beat Sam Stein 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 and Robinson collected career win No. 30 with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Casey Knipe at No. 5.
Rocha overcame an opening-set loss to down the Mules' (6-4) William Rose 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 in a super tiebreaker at No. 2 and Nguyen locked up the shutout for Kutztown with a 6-4, 7-6 (2) win over Dyer at No. 1.
Kutztown has not ceded a team point to its opponent in four of its five wins this season.
Due to forecasted temperatures in the 30s, the Golden Bears' PSAC opener at Jefferson tomorrow has been postponed until Wednesday, April 8. Kutztown will instead open the PSAC slate at Millersville next Tuesday, March 31, at 3 p.m.
