Golden Bears secure 7-0 win over Saint Vincent

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- Kutztown University women's tennis wrapped up a two-day trip to western Pennsylvania with a 7-0 victory over Saint Vincent at the Greensburg Racquet Club on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Bears improved to 4-4 on the season with the win, while the NCAA Division III Bearcats fell to 9-11.

KU cruised in doubles, winning 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 3 to jump out to a 1-0 lead. The top pairing of Isabela de Nadai (Vitoria, Brazil/St. Paul's School) and Maddie Gilbert (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) defeated Carolina Walters and Rachel Zgurich, while Ashlyn Phy (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) and Ryleigh Bohning (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) provided the shutout at No. 3 over Ashley Thiel and Cloie Causer. The visitors completed the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win from Gabby Gentile (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Kendra Yerger (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) against Sydney McWreath and Bella Baumgardner at No. 2.

The Golden Bears continued to assert themselves over Saint Vincent in singles, winning five of six flights in straight sets.

Gilbert was first off the court with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Zgurich at No. 2, followed by a 6-2, 6-2 victory from Gentile against Baumgardner at No. 4. Bohning clinched the match result with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over McWreath at No. 3.

In the first singles match, de Nadai went to a super tiebreaker to fend off Walters 6-2, 2-6, 10-5.

Yerger beat Thiel 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 and Phy downed Cecilia Hickin 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 to finish off the Bearcats.

Wednesday's match was played indoors due to cold temperatures and forecasted winds.

Kutztown will look to get back outdoors when it heads to Philadelphia to take on Jefferson next Tuesday, March 24, at 2 p.m.
