Golden Bears pick up MEC sweep over West Liberty, Wheeling

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- Kutztown University acrobatics & tumbling collected two big Mountain East Conference victories Saturday afternoon with its highest meet score of the season. The Golden Bears defeated host West Liberty, 248.030-245.650 and Wheeling, 248.030-205.165.

With the wins, the Golden Bears improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in MEC competition. Kutztown has already matched its highest win total in the program's four years of existence with two regular season meets remaining.

KU jumped out to an early edge over West Liberty and a commanding advantage over Wheeling in the compulsory event and maintained its lead over both opposing squads throughout the meet.

Scores of 9.50/10 in the pyramid heat and 9.60/10 in the toss heat helped the Bears win the event with a score of 34.95. West Liberty scored 34.85 and Wheeling 25.35. Kutztown's 9.60 in the toss heat tied a program meet record set back in 2022 against East Stroudsburg.

The Maroon and Gold continued to perform well in the acro event with scores of 9 or better in all three heats to stave off an evenly-matched West Liberty (3-5) team by just over half a point. KU put forth a 9.05/9.95 in the 5-element heat, a 9.15/9.65 in the 6-element heat and a 9.50/9.90 in the 7-element heat.

Kutztown went into the half with a 90.90-90.80 lead over the host Hilltoppers and a 90.90-73.25 lead over Wheeling (1-6) after pulling off a school record 9.95/10 in the pyramid open heat.

The Golden Bears went on to win all three events in the second half: toss, tumbling and the team event. KU scored a 9.00/9.40 in the toss 450 salto heat and a 9.40/9.55 in the tumbling 6-element pass to highlight its second half efforts.

Kutztown will be back at home next Friday, March 28, to face Glenville State at 6 p.m., before closing out the regular season with Senior Day against Fairmont State on Saturday, April 5, at 3 p.m.
