FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Kutztown University acrobatics & tumbling team collected its first-ever Mountain East Conference victory against West Virginia State, but a late comeback bid against host Frostburg State came up just short in a season-opening tri-meet Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (1-1, 1-1 MEC) outscored WVSU in each half for a 230.260-190.250 win, while Frostburg State prevailed over KU 231.465-230.260.
Kutztown scored 9.0 or higher in four heats during the first half, including a meet-high 9.80 out of 10 in the pyramid open. Karah Paull's squad also turned in impressive scores in the compulsory pyramid (9.15/10), acro 5-element (9.00/9.95) and acro 7-element (9.45/10).
The Maroon and Gold trailed Frostburg 86.55-83.45 at the break and conceded just over 2.5 more points in the toss and tumbling events before outscoring the Bobcats in the team routine.
A 9.175 out of 9.55 in the aerial pass highlighted KU's efforts in the tumbling event. The Bears scored a 78.01 out of 96.71 in the team event while Frostburg put up a 73.39 out of 98.09. Though Kutztown pulled back almost five points it wasn't quite enough as the Bobcats hung on for a 1.205-point margin of victory.
Kutztown will host its first of four home meets this season next Friday, Feb. 21, against Morgan State at 6 p.m.
