FLEETWOOD, Pa. – On a warm and sunny Sunday at the Moselem Springs Golf Club, junior Brooke Graham (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) shot the second-best round in a field of 33 players with an 8-over par 78 on the par 70 to push the Kutztown University women's golf team to the top of the team standings after the first day of competition at the Kutztown Fall Invitational.
The Carlisle, Pa., native went 1-over on the front nine, recording pars on eight of the nine holes. The third-year Golden Bear added three straight pars between holes 14 and 16, and finished with her second straight 11-par round. The team's lead golfer currently sits three strokes back from Shephard's Sara Veara, who recorded a 5-over 75 in the opening round.
Freshman Eva Moawad (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) sank a birdie on No. 1, playing at 325 yards, and had four pars included in her round of 13-over 83 on the par 70 course to sit ninth in the individual standings. Junior Grace Klements (Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Pinelands Regional) tallied four pars and shot 87 to take 10th, while freshman Livia Andov (Pekanbaru, Indonesia) recorded five birdies and finished with an 89, good for 15th. Rhi Stutz (Prescott, Wisc./Prescott) had a solid front nine, making the turn at 5-over on the strength of three pars and a birdie on the 145-yard, par 3 fifth. She ended her round with a 91.
Gabby Cohen (Jeffersonville, N.Y./Sullivan West), who played as an individual, opened with three straight pars and a 4-over 39 on the front nine before sinking a birdie on the 315-yard, par 4 14th, and finishing with a career-best 11-over 81, second best among competing Golden Bears and tied for third-best in the field.
Individual competitors Alana Cristino (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) (90) and Brooke Prindiville (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) (108) rounded out Kutztown's competitors.
The Golden Bears shot 337 (+57) overall, leading the six-team field into the final round. Bloomsburg (341, +61) is second, four shots back and Jefferson (350, +70) is third.
Monday's second round is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
