KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Kutztown University women's golf saw its four scorers separated by just five strokes and its entire lineup separated by five as the PSAC Championship teed off Wednesday at Berkleigh Golf Club.
The Golden Bears, in search of their third straight top five finish at the tournament, are currently fifth after shooting an opening round 344 (+56). There is a slim 13-shot gap between Bloomsburg in third (333, +45) and California (Pa.) in seventh (346, +58).
Two-time All-PSAC First Team selection and last year's PSAC Championship runner-up
Brooke Graham (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) was the low scorer for the Maroon and Gold in the first round with an 11-over par 83 to rank 14th among 54 players. Graham recorded one of just two birdies for her team on the par 3, 135-yard third, while adding seven pars.
Fellow junior
Grace Klements (Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Pinelands Regional) made six pars, including five on the back nine, to card an 86 (+14), good for 23rd on the leaderboard.
Livia Andov (Pekanbaru, Indonesia/) also collected six pars in her PSAC Championship debut, getting around the 5,803-yard, par 72 course in 15-over 87.
Gabby Cohen (Jeffersonville, N.Y./Sullivan West) birdied the 117-yard, par 3 12th and had three pars to round out Kutztown's scoring quartet with a 16-over 88.
Freshman
Eva Moawad (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) totaled five pars and was just one stroke outside of the Bears' scoring group with a 17-over 89.
Six-time defending champion Gannon and West Chester distanced themselves from the pack after the opening round. The Golden Knights shot 308 (+20) to lead the Golden Rams by four shots (312, +24). Bloomsburg is 21 strokes back of WCU in third (333, +45), with Clarion (339, +51), Kutztown (344, +56), Millersville (345, +57) and Cal (346, +58) holding spots 4-7.
Gannon's Anastasia Lopes put forth an even round 72 to lead the individual standings by three shots over teammate Alexandria LeCureux and Bloomsburg's Sophia Reed.
Second round play is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., Thursday.
