JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The visiting 18th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team fell to the 20th-ranked Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats 29-16 in a meeting between ranked Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference teams inside the Sports Center Friday night.
The Golden Bears (6-1, 1-1 PSAC) drop their first dual of the season to the Mountain Cats (7-2, 2-0 PSAC), who have now won five consecutive outings dating back to the first week of the new year.
The dual featured three third-period pins in the first four bouts, including one with eight seconds remaining from Kutztown's Javien DeLeon (Allentown, Pa./Liberty) at 133 pounds. The Mountain Cats expanded their lead with 13 team points over the following three weight classes, building a 19-6 lead heading into the back half of the dual.
Kutztown capped off their scoring with a trio of ranked victories, with the Gimbor brothers earning decisions at 165 and 174 pounds, while second-ranked Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) earned a 15-2 major decision at 184 pounds. Pitt-Johnstown wrapped up the night with a pair of wins at 197 and 285 pounds.
Kutztown returns to Keystone Arena the following Friday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. to face American International in a non-conference dual before welcoming Gannon (Saturday, Feb. 1), Millersville (Friday, Feb. 7) and Shippensburg (Friday, Feb. 14) for a trio of PSAC home duals.
