KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Last November, Kutztown field hockey and head coach
Marci Scheuing won the NCAA Division II national championship, bringing home KU's first team national title. For the success her program accomplished on the field last fall, Scheuing was voted the 2023-24 Dr. Dorothy Moyer KU Women's Coach of the Year Monday.
Scheuing, who just completed her 10th year at the helm, led the Golden Bears to their best season in program history in 2023, finishing 19-3 overall and 7-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, winning the program and university's first NCAA team championship, knocking off defending champion East Stroudsburg 2-1 in the championship game on Nov. 19, 2023. KU's 19 wins is a new program record and it also set a new record for shutouts in a season with 14.
Scheuing has built the Golden Bears into a perennial contender at the conference and national levels, while also boasting one of the top academic teams in the country.
Kutztown tied a program best with six representatives named All-PSAC in
Juliana Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Schalick),
Sarah Gatehouse (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson),
Erin Gonzalez (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot),
Grace Harrold (York, Pa./Central York),
Mackenzie Kile (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) and
Danielle Panati (West Chester, Pa./Unionville). Gatehouse earned KU's first ever PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year honor, joining Donato as NFHCA First Team All-Americans. The senior was also the PSAC's Champion Scholar and the NCAA's Elite 90 award winner for her work in the classroom.
It's the third time that Scheuing has earned the award, which dates back to 1993. From 1987-92 a combined department Coach of the Year was recognized. The award recognizes the coach of a KU women's varsity sport for leading their team to success in a given academic year and is voted upon by athletic department administration, coaches and support staff.
