KUTZTOWN, Pa. – For the third straight game, the top-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team exploded for eight or more goals while keeping its opponent off the scoreboard, cruising past Wingate 9-0 Saturday morning at Andre Reed Stadium.
With their second consecutive nine-goal performance, the Golden Bears (4-0) continued their blistering offensive start, piling up 35 goals across the first four games of the season. Even more impressive, Kutztown has not allowed a shot in three games, recording three straight shutouts.
Kutztown struck early and often, finding the back of the cage in every quarter. Seven of the nine goals came off penalty corners, highlighting the Bears' clinical set-piece execution. Seven different players scored, while 10 in total found their way onto the stat sheet with either a goal or assist.
The Bears wasted no time setting the tone in the first quarter, striking three times on corners.
Erin Gonzalez (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) opened the scoring just over four minutes in, followed by
Marlee Fetrow (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) and freshman
Bree Zoccolo (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) to make it 3-0 after 15 minutes.
Ellie Myers (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) extended the lead only 45 seconds into the second quarter with a sharp finish.
Olivia Kirkpatrick (Annville, Pa./Palmyra) doubled the advantage less than a minute later, before Gonzalez added her second of the day. Freshman
Katie Lawless (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) then capped the half with her first career goal, pushing the margin to 7-0.
Kutztown added one goal in each of the final two quarters to round out the scoring.
Grace Harrold (York, Pa./Central York) ripped home a rocket off a corner in the third, and Myers tallied her second of the afternoon in the fourth.
Defensively, goalkeepers
Tess Adolf (Lawrence, N.J./Lawrence) and
Alaina Telenko (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) shared the clean sheet, though neither was called upon to make a save, with KU outshooting Wingate (1-1) 23-0 and holding a 19-0 advantage in penalty corners.
The Golden Bears will look to keep their dominant run alive when they return to Andre Reed Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 17, hosting IUP at 5:30 p.m.
