BROOKVILLE, N.Y. -- Long Island University grabbed an early lead that it would never relinquish in a 255.075-248.750 victory over the Kutztown University acrobatics & tumbling team Monday night.
The Golden Bears fall to 5-2 on the season while the Sharks improve to 3-4.
Kutztown posted a pair of 9.0+ heats in the compulsory event, including a 9.70 in the pyramid and a 9.05 in the toss, but trailed by half a point at the conclusion of the event.
Despite two more 9.0+ scores in the acro event, LIU took advantage of a slip up by the Bears in the 6-element heat to increase its lead by more than a point. Kutztown registered a 9.80 in the 5-element heat and a season-best 9.45 in the 7-element heat.
KU excelled in the pyramid event with a 9.15 in the inversion heat, a 9.45 in the synchronized heat and a 9.70 in the open heat, allowing the visitors to keep pace with LIU and trail 91.50-89.45 at the half.
The Golden Bears set season-highs scores with their performances in the duo heat (8.650) and open heat (9.225) of the tumbling event. Accompanied by a 9.300 in the 6-element pass, Kutztown won the event 50.000-49.775.
LIU extended its lead in the team event with an 88.350 to KU's 84.40.
The Golden Bears are back at home next week to wrap up the regular season with a pair of meets. Kutztown faces Caldwell, Tuesday, April 2, at 6 p.m., before hosting Iona on Senior Day, Saturday, April 6, at 2 p.m.
