Program meet record falls again as Kutztown wins thriller over Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- The Kutztown University acrobatics & tumbling team registered its first-ever 90+ score in the team event to set a new program-high meet score for the second time this season and knock off Glenville State by the slimmest of margins, 256.830-256.060, Wednesday night at the Waco Center.

The Golden Bears (5-1) produced a number of outstanding and record-breaking scores throughout the meet and all of those clutch performances were needed to defeat the Pioneers (2-3).

Despite trailing 92.00-91.40 at the half, KU posted some of the best numbers in team history before the break. Specifically, the Bears turned in new compulsory and acro event record scores along with breaking or tying six heat records.

In the compulsory event, head coach Karah Paull's team eclipsed 9.00 in the acro heat for the first time in program history with a 9.10. Kutztown went on to match its best ever score in the pyramid heat (9.75) and set an event record with a 36.35 score out of 40.00 possible points.

The momentum carried forward into the acro event where the Golden Bears set a team record with a 27.80 overall score. The visitors topped 9.0 in both the 5-element (9.85) and 7-element (9.35) heats, with the 5-element score registering as a new meet record.

KU tied its highest score ever in the pyramid open heat with a 9.90.

Glenville State extended its 0.6 halftime lead just slightly by outscoring Kutztown 27.00-25.45 in the toss event and 50.00-49.30 in the tumbling event.

Kutztown did just enough to overcome the deficit in the team event where it put forth a 90.68 out of a possible 99.88. The Pioneers scored 87.06 from their start value of 101.40.

Wednesday evening's meet was originally scheduled to be a tri-meet with host Glenville State and Bluefield State. Bluefield State did not arrive to take part in the meet, thus awarding a forfeit victory to the Golden Bears, which improved their record to 5-1 and tied the program record for wins in a season.

The Golden Bears will travel to Long Island University for a dual meet on Monday, March 25, at 6 p.m.
