Kutztown downs Shepherd in season finale, earns three seed and home playoff game

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown women's basketball shook off a sluggish first quarter and-a-half to take down Shepherd 70-50 on Saturday in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division regular season finale inside Keystone Arena.

The Golden Bears evened their overall record at 14-14 and improved to 12-10 in the PSAC, securing the three seed in next week's PSAC Tournament and a home game in the First Round. KU will host the sixth seed, Lock Haven, on Monday evening, Feb. 27, at 5:30 p.m. It is the third consecutive victory for the Maroon and Gold and will head to the postseason with a ton of positive momentum.

Kutztown led 15-11 after the opening quarter, but had to weather the storm in the second quarter as the Rams opened the frame scoring the first five points to take a 16-15 lead and later were ahead 18-17. With the score tied 20-20 and 3:50 left, KU scored 13 of the final 15 points to go into the locker room at halftime on top 33-22.

KU answered in the third quarter, outscoring Shepherd 22-12 to take control of the game, leading 55-34 heading into the fourth quarter, and held firm for the rest of the way.

Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) led the way for the Golden Bears, recording a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, adding three assists, two blocks and one steal in 24 minutes. Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) and Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) also finished in double figures in points with 12 each. Zara Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) and Noelle Baxter (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) both had seven points.

Kutztown is the three seed and will host Lock Haven, the six seed, on Monday. The Golden Bears and Bald Eagles split the two regular season games between each other with both teams winning on their home courts.
