KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Kutztown honored its 2023 senior class and closed its home schedule with a 31-16 victory over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) foe Shippensburg Friday night at Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears were staked to an early 12-0 lead as
Andreo Ferraina (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) claimed an uncontested win at 125, before
KJ Fenstermacher (Northampton, Pa./Northampton), one of six seniors recognized in a pre-match ceremony, hastily threw Jack Devlin to his back for a pin at 20 seconds of the first period in the 133-pound bout.
Shippensburg (9-9, 1-6 PSAC) got back within 12-9 on a 10-8 overtime decision from Al Miscovich against
Trent Thompson (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) at 141 and a Reese Polulak pin at 149, but the Golden Bears (7-4, 3-3 PSAC) responded with wins in four straight weight classes to put the match out of reach.
Sean Smith (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) was a victor by forfeit at 157,
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) topped Kyler Everly with a 12-3 major decision at 165 and
Ethan Baney (Hanover, Pa./South Western) blanked Nyiem Flucas, 6-0, at 174. Nationally-ranked No. 6
Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) extended his season-long winning streak to 21 matches and claimed his 30th victory as a Golden Bear (30-3) with an 89-second pin of Owen Koch at 184.
Weinberg leads KU with nine pins, a 10-0 dual record, 6-0 PSAC dual record has earned the Bears 46 dual team points on the season.
The Raiders received back-to-back wins from Trey Shoemaker (decision) and Danny Scheib (major decision) at 197 and 285, respectively, to reduce the deficit to 15 at match's end.
Kutztown concludes its dual slate with a trip to East Stroudsburg next Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Bears will then turn their focus to the postseason, starting with the Feb. 25, Super Region 1 Championships at ESU.
