Kutztown shuts out Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Kutztown University men's tennis won its second straight match by making quick work of Scranton in a 9-0 non-conference victory Wednesday at the Royal Courts.

Wyatt Pauley's team got off to a fast start behind an 8-0 win from Dang Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) and Lucas Cherniak (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuela Superior de Comercio Carlos Pellegrini) over Steven Prosperino and Nathan Harrison at third doubles and momentum just built from there.

Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) and Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) downed Harrison Clark and Lucas Kotcho, 8-3, at No. 2, while Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) picked up an 8-4 victory over Maxwell Dombrowski and Isaiah Dore at No. 1 to give the visitors a convincing 3-0 lead heading to singles.

Kutztown (2-2) continued to have its way on the individual side. Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) didn't drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Harrison at No. 6, while Nguyen dropped just one in a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory against Clark at No. 3.

Gincauskas turned back Prosperino 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 and Perez overpowered Dore 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) was also a straight set winner for the Maroon and Gold, defeating Scranton's (1-3) Kotcho 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.

Barcelo completed the sweep for KU in three sets over Dombrowski at No. 1. After dropping the first, 6-1, Barcelo rallied with matching 6-2 wins in the second and third.

Wednesday's match was played under NCAA Division III scoring rules due to Scranton hosting. Instead of playing best 2-of-3 in doubles for one team point, each match counted towards the team score.

The Golden Bears will conclude their fall season by sending a contingent of players to this weekend's PSAC Individual Championships at Bloomsburg. The tournament has been bumped back a day due to forecasted rain on Saturday, so play will begin Sunday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m.
