EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- Kutztown University acrobatics & tumbling followed up its momentous inaugural meet with another program benchmark, Friday night. The Golden Bears swept a tri-match by defeating host East Stroudsburg 210.245 and Stevenson 210.245-127.650 for the first wins in program history.
Kutztown came out of the gates strong with impressive scores in the first three heats of the compulsory event. In the acro heat, the Bears achieved an 8.55 score out of 10, before putting up a 9.45 in the pyramid heat and an 8.70 in the toss.
The pyramid heat was one of four in which the Maroon and Gold exceeded 9.00 on the night.
The Golden Bears (2-1) outscored both the Warriors and Mustangs in all six events.
After producing a 31.55 out of a possible 40.00 in the compulsory event, KU went for 25.70 out of 28.05 in the arco event, bolstered by a 9.00 of 9.80 in the 7 element heat with
Tiffani Lincoln (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta),
Natalie Harkins (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem),
Isabella Columba (Easton, Pa./Easton),
Samaiyah Wright-McBride (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) and
Savannah Paige (Palmyra, Pa./Hershey) on the mat.
Kutztown took plenty of momentum to halftime with a 27.35 out of 29.00 in the pyramid event. Lincoln,
Paige Saxey (Clearfield, Utah/Clearfield), Columba, Wright-McBride,
RoseMary Werkheiser (Easton, Pa./Easton), Paige and
Genesis Maldonado (Easton, Pa./Wilson Area) scored 9.40 of a possible 9.80 in the inversion heat. In the open heat, Lincoln, Saxey, Columba, Werkheiser, Paige and Maldonado were joined by
Allison Fernandez (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) in scoring a 9.45 out of 9.70, tied for the Bears' highest-scoring heat in the meet.
The Golden Bears led ESU 84.60-76.80 and Stevenson 84.60-70.80 at the break.
The toss event saw KU score 7.50 or better in all three heats. Saxey rattled off an 8.500 in the aerial pass heat and Fernandez an 8.050 in the open pass heat of the tumbling event.
Kutztown also competed in the team event for the first time, scoring 62.42 out of a possible 84.43.
In addition to capturing the first two team victories in program history, Friday, the wins were also the first for head coach
Karah Paull. Kutztown will get back to practice for two weeks leading up to a road meet at Trine in Angola, Ind., Saturday, March 19.
